Death in Autumn

Magdalen Nabb: Death in Autumn (USA 1985)

From the Publisher:
Marshal Guarnaccia of the Florence Carabinieri can almost always sense when somebody's lying. Unfortunately, he thinks the two young Swedish tourists are telling the truth when they claim to have seen a body floating in the river.

There's a body, all right -- a woman of about 50, naked except for an expensive fur coat. Who could she be? No woman of that age has been reported missing. The coat seems to be of foreign origin, so perhaps she is not Italian.

A week goes by, and nobody comes forward to claim the body or to report a missing wife or mother. It's only when Guarnaccia makes a routine inquiry at the Riverside Hotel that he finds the answer to at least part of his puzzle. A forty-eight-year-old woman has been missing for eight days, and the hotel just assumed she had run out without paying her bill.

Now Guarnaccia knows the identity of his victim, but he must still discover how and why she died. When did she arrive in Florence? Why has nobody reported her missing? Where did she get her money? With his usual methodical police work and a fine instinct for ferreting out the strange truth, Marshal moves closer to the shocking answers.

Readers who have savored the Marshal's adventures in Death of an Englishman, Death of a Dutchman, and Death in Springtime will welcome this latest addition to Magdalen Nabb's superb Florentine mystery series.

MAGDALEN NABB has lived in Florence since 1975. Originally a potter, she now writes full time and is at work on a major thriller. Her play, Florence of the North, was produced professionally in 1979.
