Vita Nuova

Magdalen Nabb: Vita Nuova (UK 2009)

From the Publisher:
When Marshal Guarnaccia is called upon to investigate the murder of a young woman, he is convinced that there's more to her family than meets the eye, and wonders if the girl's father, Paoletti, might have had something to do with her death...

Enlisting the help of a local journalist, Marshal Guarnaccia's investigations draw him into the seedy underworld of Florence - lap dancing, prostitution and the illegal human trafficking of Eastern European women who are sold into the sex trade. But can he save these women before it's too late, and what do they have to do with the killing of Daniela Paoletti? Distracted by the plight of these women and the murder investigation, Guarnaccia forgets about his own personal problems; but it's not long before he has choices to make - should he seek help and risk exposing himself and possibly losing his job, or should he go it alone?

'Vita Nuova is a skilfully plotted mystery... a splendid addition to this enjoyable series.' Sunday Telegraph
'Beautifully crafted, sensitively paced and cleverly characterised.' Sunday Herald

Vita Nuova

Magdalen Nabb: Vita Nuova (USA 2009)

From the Publisher:
"A final reminder of why [Nabb] is irreplaceable among English speaking novelists who write mysteries with Italian locales. Like the 13 previous novels in this series set in Florence and featuring Marshal Guarnaccia, Vita Nuova reflects the sensibility of someone who sees much, speaks softly and takes pity on strangers." -- The New York Times Book Review

Marshal Guarnaccia's sense of malaise sets in as Florence closes for the summer holiday. But outside the quiet city, a wealthy young woman is shot to death in her parents' villa. A single mother pursuing her doctorate seems an unlikely target for slaughter, but perhaps the marshal can parse the truth from her unusual family.

Vita Nuova

Magdalen Nabb: Vita Nuova (USA 2008)

From the Publisher:
Daniela, a studious single mother studying for a doctorate in chemistry, rarely goes out. She is the older daughter of the Paoletti family who have recently acquired a luxurious home outside of Florence. One hot August day her sister, Silvana, discovers her body on the floor of her bedroom in the tower of the villa. She has been shot to death. Marshal Guarnaccia is initially summoned by a neighbor who knows him. But to his surprise, the prosecutor, who has disparaged his ability in the past, asks that he stay on the case. The reason for this request soon becomes clear.

The family employs two young women as servants, both illegal immigrants from Poland. The builders putting in a swimming pool are Romanian. Signora Paoletti seems to be on drugs. Once, years ago, her husband was her pimp. Now he has made a fortune, presumably from running a nightclub. No one knows who the father of Daniela's little boy is. There are a lot of suspects for the marshal to interview, but no apparent motive for the murder.

And yet, by proceeding slowly and patiently, he discovers the truth about the death of Daniela Paoletti.
