Marcia Muller: Where Echoes Live (USA 1997)

From the Publisher:
GO WEST, GO WEST...
Since the Gold Rush, California prospectors have siphoned off the waters of isolated Tufa Lake, exposing the fragile, otherworldly mineral formations of the lake basin. Now a local environmental group seeks to block the latest incursion by developers - a massive mining operation funded by TransPacific, a U.S.-Hong Kong interest that seems to be behind a series of break-ins, disappearances, and shady land deals. Into this stark, lunar landscape treads San Francisco P.I. Sharon McCone, searching for a local eccentric now missing after a suspicious land deal.

When the bullet-ridden corpse of an investor surfaces in the lake's silvery waters, McCone finds herself on a twisted trail that leads to San Francisco and then back to where it all began - the eerie desert mesas where a murderer prepares to kill again...

From the Publisher:
"Sharon McCone is emerging as one of crime fiction's most original and durable figures." -- CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
IN HER TWELFTH OUTING, P.I. Sharon McCone leaves her San Francisco turf for the forbidding high desert landscape of Tufa Lake near the Nevada border. An environmental group thinks that the Hong Kong-based Transpacific Corporation has some dubious plans for an abandoned gold mine near the ghost town of Promiseville.

Sharon's investigation takes a grim turn when the bullet-riddled body of a Transpacific employee turns up in Tula Lake. Then a local prospector suddenly disappears and Lionel Ong, the president of Transpacific, is kidnapped. Has one of the environmental activists, perhaps the mysterious Hy Ripinsky, taken matters into his own hands?

As she pieces together the interlocking puzzle of personal histories and private interests that led to murder, Sharon finds that her heart won't follow where her logic leads. It takes a final explosive confrontation and a hard look at her own darkest impulses to solve the most disturbing case of her career.

From the Publisher:
San Francisco private investigator Sharon McCone has been asked by former colleague Anne-Marie Altman -- now counsel for the California Coalition for Environmental Preservation -- to meet her in the high-desert town of Tufa Lake, near the Nevada border. Altman is looking into the plans of the Transpacific Corporation to reopen a gold mine near the ghost town of Promiseville, where large-scale commercial mining could seri-ously damage the ecosystem of the area, as well as destroy the historic buildings of the town.

Altman tells McCone of some bizarre events that have occurred since she and her associate Ned Sanderman hit town. For example, thr dis-appearance of Earl Hopwood, the prospector who sold Transpacific the mine. And break-ins at the cabins where she and Sanderman are stay-ing. Not to mention the body found floating in the lake.
