Sweet Danger

Margery Allingham: Sweet Danger (USA 2007)

From the Publisher:
After centuries as a Balkan backwater, the sleepy town of Averna has -- overnight -- become a stunningly valuable port, thanks to an earthquake that rejiggered the regional topography. But to whose coffers will that value accrue?

Albert Campion, that interesting young man, has a hunch that the answer is to be found in a tiny Suffolk village, where a peculiar -- and dead-broke -- family may be able to lay claim to the Averna fortune, provided they can produce the requisite proof of lineage.

The proof? Nothing terribly difficult. Just your average ancient riddle, stolen drum, long-lost bell, priceless crown, and, oh yes, a necklace of disappearing rubies.

Margery Allingham: Sweet Danger. The 5th Albert Campion Mystery. Felony & Mayhem, ISBN: 193339790X (December, 2007), 201 p., $14.95.

Sweet Danger

Margery Allingham: Sweet Danger (UK 2004)

From the Publisher:
Way back during the crusades Richard I presented the Huntingforest family with the tiny Balkan state of Averna but since then the kingdom has been forgotten, until circumstances in Europe suddenly render it extremely strategically important to the British Government. They hire unconventional detective Albert Campion to recover the long-missing proofs of ownership - the deeds, a crown, and a receipt - which are apparently hidden in the village of Pontisbright. On arriving in Pontisbright, Campion and his friends meet the eccentric, young, flame-haired Amanda Fitton and her family who claim to be the rightful heirs to Averna and join in the hunt. Unfortunately, criminal financier Brett Savanake is also interested in finding the evidence for his own ends. Things get rather rough in the village as Savanake's heavies up the pressure on Campion to solve the mystery before they do. In the course of the hunt, Campion dresses in drag, takes refuge in a tree, is nearly drowned in a mill race, and his friends find themselves bound and gagged in sacks, shot at, and witnesses to a satanic ceremony led by the local doctor. The rural calm of Pontisbright is well and truly shattered.

Campion knew these were only clues to a deeper mystery. His client was the Government. His adversary was one of the brainiest, richest, most powerful and ruthless men who ever lived. The stake were the peace and safety of the entire world.

Inside:
THE MARK OF FEAR
Sometimes it was called the God-save-us mark.
An ancient, pre-Christian sign of panic, it showed up in times of plague and famine and invasion. Campion had found it in Egypt, in Andalusia. He had last seen it scrawled on the wall of a war-doomed house in France. Now it had appeared written in the dust, scratched on a fence rail, in a remote English valley where little had changed in a thousand years,

Campion could read its reflection in the terror-stricken eyes of the silent country people. But the real target of this monstrous evil was a girl. Small, red-haired, lovely, too young to die.

Sweet Danger

Margery Allingham: Sweet Danger (USA 1963)

From the Publisher:
Driving home from Italy, Gufly Randall passed by the Hotel Beauregard at Mentone, where, with some surprise, he saw a small man, armed with a pistol, climbing secretively out of a ground-floor window. Guffy, who knew the manager well, stopped to tell him about the incident, and learnt that several other suspicious characters were also in the hotel. After inquiries these turned out to be Albert Campion and two friends engaged in a fantastic and fateful pursuit of a European crown. Again, Guffy described what he had seen, and the excitement that followed was so intense that he decided to stay and follow this sweetly dangerous adventure to its end.
