Nicolas Freeling: A Long Silence (UK 1977)

From the Publisher:
It was not a very important case. No crime had been committed. For Van der Valk the shady dealings of a prosperous Amsterdam jeweller were more of a private puzzle.

Two bullets put paid to that incurable curiosity.

'He was the best of all police detectives, quirky yet sympathetic, a professional but still very much an individual; compared with him, even Maigret seems scarcely better than two-dimensional... . We shall miss him' - Edmund Crispin in the Sunday Times
