From the Publisher:
Renowned French Detective Castang investigates a missing wife and her suspicious husband in this mystery from an Edgar award-winning British crime writer.

Guy and Sibille Lebfevre had what most people would call a normal marriage-until they have an argument while on a road trip through the Vosges mountains. Enraged, Sibille gets out of the car, disappearing on the otherwise deserted road, never to be heard from again.

Six months later, Guy has not even bothered to look for his wife. When Inspector Castang questions him, Guy claims his wife is too proud to come home. This does not sit right with Castang or anyone close to Sibille, as they all suspect her husband of murdering her. But as Castang soon realizes, no one really knows what happens-or doesn't happen-between a husband and wife...

From the Publisher:
A dazzling variation on the traditional crime story in which the question, for Castang, is not who did it - but whether it happened at all...

Successful landscape gardener Guy Lefebvre is driving through the Vosges mountains with his wife Sybille when, tired and irritable at the end of a long day, the couple have a flaming row. She slams out of the car and is never seen again.

Many people smell a rat, convinced that Guy has done away with his over-ambitious and exacting wife, and Castang is a prime mover in following this hypothesis.

Touching, harsh, funny, suspenseful - this is Nicolas Freeling at his most original best.

'Flinty, sardonic and quite inimitable.' -- Philip Oakes, Literary Review
'This is crime-writing at its best. Don't miss it.' -- Sheila Upjohn, Eastern Daily Press

Sibille Lefebvre, after a flaming row with her husband, slammed out of the car and out of his life. Or so Guy says.
But ex-neighbour Arlette, widow of Van der Valk, isn't convinced. Would any woman abandon her past so completely? Or did Guy, fed up with her nagging ambitions, bury her somewhere on the lonely road through the Vosges?

Commissaire Henri Castang, reluctantly involved by Arlette, has to ask not 'Who did it?' but 'Was it done at all?' And finds some unexpected answers...
