Nicolas Freeling: Wolfnight (USA 1982) From the Publisher: As is always the case with Freeling, Wolfnight is more than a police procedural; it is a fascinating story of police officers who are faced with politicans' attempts to manipulate them and steer them away from solving a crime, from doing their jobs. Castang, confronted with an absorbing and complex right-wing conspiracy, finds himself and his career unexpectedly at risk. Can he pursue justice while still protecting himself and his family -- two goals that may not be reconcilable? Castang has never been more attractive than he is in Wolfnight when he finds himself hunted, ensnared and nearly seduced by an enemy far more daring than we have met to date. In Wolfnight, Nicolas Freeling has written a novel of contemporary intrigue and politics, as well as a moving portrait of a policeman caught in a universal and timeless web. Nicolas Freeling was born in London and raised in France and England. After his military service in World War II, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, working as a professional cook in a number of hotels and restaurants. His first book, Love in Amsterdam, was published in 1961. Since then, he has written numerous novels and non-fiction works. His most recent books have been Castang's City, the fifth Henri Castang novel, and Arlette, the second in a series about the widow Van der Valk. Mr. Freeling was awarded a Golden Dagger by the Crime Writers Association in 1963, the Grand Prix de Roman Policier in 1965, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award of the Mystery Writers of America, Inc., 1966. Mr. Freeling lives in France with his wife and their two children. Jacket illustration by Vivienne Flesher Nicolas Freeling: Wolfnight. A Novel of Suspense. New York: Pantheon Books, 1982, ISBN: 0394522664, 200 p., $12.50.
